Exporting the NSW Indicator and Content Groups Overview

NSW, NSW indicator, indicator overview, export

How can I use this data?

Follow these steps to ensure your assessment, planning, and reporting are consistent, targeted, and meaningful.

Strengthening Reporting. When making reporting judgments:

  • Match student work directly to specific NSW syllabus indicators (not general impressions).

  • Use annotated samples or evidence to justify your decision.

  • Ensure your grade or comment reflects what the student consistently demonstrates, not a one-off task.

In practice: Instead of writing “working well,” link to an outcome (e.g. identifies main ideas in texts) and base your judgment on multiple pieces of evidence.

Plan Next Teaching Steps

After reviewing student evidence:

  • Identify specific gaps

  • Group students based on need (enable/extend).

  • Plan targeted teaching to address those needs.

Communicate with Parents

When writing reports or comments:

  • Clearly state what the student can do using syllabus-aligned language.

  • Avoid vague phrases (e.g. “doing well,” “needs improvement”).

  • Include a clear next step for learning.

In practice:

  • “Can identify key ideas in a text and support answers with evidence.”

  • “Next step: develop skills in making inferences from implied information.”

Please note: this is only available for the NSW Curriculum assessment data.
