Paper-based assessments are able to be generated for certain assessments including strand assessments and Flexi-assessments. The availability of paper-based assessments depends on the Curriculum/Syllabus that your school uses.
Enter paper-based assessment results for a class
Select a class and ensure the range/stage for each student is correct.
Select the Assessment Actions drop-down and then select Enter Paper Results:
The paper-based results modal will then open.
How students are grouped
Students are automatically grouped by their next available assessment. Each group shows the:
Range/Stage (e.g. Range 2–3)
Assessment type (PRE, MID, or POST)
Assessment ID
This means you can work through each group in order without needing to check which assessment each student is up to.
Note: If PRE/MID/POST is not set for an assessment, you can still enter paper results. Students will be grouped by the next assessment they are yet to begin.
Downloading assessment PDFs
Each group has a Download PDF dropdown.
Select either:
Questions — the paper assessment for students to complete
Answers — the answer key for marking
Entering and submitting results
For each student, tick the questions they answered correctly. When you're done:
Select Submit Results to save the student's results.
The result will display (as a percentage or level, depending on your setting in the Class List view.
An Edit Results button will appear next to the result.
Repeat for each student in the group.
Editing a submitted result
To change a result you've already submitted:
Select Edit Results next to the student's result.
Update the question ticks as needed.
Select Submit Results to save the changes.
Students with online assessments enabled or in progress
Some students may appear in separate groups rather than with their assessment:
Assessment enabled online
These students have an online assessment enabled but haven't started it yet. To enter paper results, you'll need to disable their online assessment first.
Assessments in progress
These students have started an assessment online but haven't submitted it. To enter paper results, their current assessment needs to be completed or cleared first.
Assessments Completed
These students have results for all versions of this assessment. To enter paper results, their latest assessment needs to be cleared first. Click here to read about clearing assessments.

Entering paper-based assessment results for an individual student
Click into the student profile and select the pen and paper icon to download the assessment, this will download the paper-assessment to your device for you to print.
Once a student has completed their paper-based assessment, you can import it back into Essential Assessment. Firstly, grab the ID number for the assessment, which can be located in the top left-hand corner of the assessment.
Click on the class the student is in and then their name. From here, click Enter paper assessment results.
You will then be prompted to mark each question the student got correct.
