Flexi Assessments for AC & VC schools

Flexi Assessments for AC and VC Educators will be available in Essential Assessment in Term 4, 2024. This helpguide provides an overview of this new functionality and covers some of the key questions you may have about flexi assessments in EA.

What are the benefits of Flexi Assessments?

With our new Flexi Assessments, you can design and create customised Maths assessments tailored to your scope and sequence, or to the specific needs of your cohort, class, or individual students. You'll be able to easily share, preview & edit flexi assessments within your school, and see data from your chosen strand & all flexi-assessments together in one place.

How can we access Flexi Assessments?

When this new feature is launched, all trialling and subscribing schools will automatically have access to Flexi Assessments. No action is required to activate the new functionality.

How will Flexi Assessments Work?

When you create Flexi Assessments, you can choose between single-strand, multistrand, and multiple levels.

Content descriptors (CDs) can be chosen one by one, to suit your assessment requirements. You can browse the CDs on the left and click them to include your assessment on the right. The CDs can then be ordered in preference.

You'll have access to the School Bank - browsing a school library of Flexi Assessments that have been created

These are accessible school wide, and not tied to class. You can create a standardised set of Flexi Assessments for the whole school to use.

Are Flexi Assessments curriculum-aligned?

Yes. The question banks you are able to choose from to create your flexi assessment are fully aligned - either to the Australian Curriculum V9 or to the Victorian Curriculum, depending on which version of EA you are subscribed to. This means that the flexi assessment you create, and the data you get from it, will be fully aligned to the curriculum you follow.

Should we use topic-based assessments or new flexi-assessments?

Most Primary maths programmes choose between two distinctive pathways for teaching and assessment: either topic-based units of work, or interleaving practice.

  • Topic-based assessment focuses on evaluating students' understanding of specific units or themes in a structured and sequential manner. In this approach, students engage deeply with a particular subject or concept, allowing them to explore it in detail before moving on to the next topic. This method helps build a solid foundation in one area before progressing to another. v
  • On the other hand, flexi-assessment offers a more adaptable approach for those programmes with interleaving practice, allowing educators to assess students across a range of topics and skills in a non-linear fashion.

We wouldn’t recommend using both topic-based and flexi-assessments on EA - instead, we’d suggest choosing one approach that best meets your needs.

How could I integrate flexi assessments at our school?

Our Teaching and Learning team have formulated the two following trajectories:

Both topic-based and Flexi Assessment support continuous learning and help educators address the diverse needs of students, promoting a personalised and responsive approach to assessment.

As an educator navigating these options, it's important to consider the unique needs of your students and school context by selecting the assessment approach that’s right for you.

If you aren’t sure, or need some guidance, reach out to our friendly team at info@essentialassessment.com.au and we’d be happy to guide you on which assessment type might be right for your teaching and learning needs.

Will there be Flexi assessments for Literacy?

Our intention is to release Flexi assessment functionality for EA Literacy in the future, but we don’t have a release date at this point in time.  We will keep our EA educators updated as and when this changes.
